Self-Portrait Madison

I’m working on my first self-portrait. I’m not sure about the background colour with the skin tones I have used. I’ve yet to tackle the hair waiting on the background. Any comments are welcome. Updated post. I changed the background and now I think it looks right. Still the hair needs work.

From oil to GraphiteI started drawing this piece with no idea of what it was going to be. Why?   I read somewhere that when painting, it’s  best to lay down a stroke, leave it alone, and go from there.  Maybe good for painting, but NOT with a medium such as graphite.  Graphite does not wipe away as oil colour does.  One lacks the benefit of going back 20 minutes in to the drawing and changing one eye or a too high eye brow.  I pushed the gum eraser into the paper so hard and nothing. The misplaced line was still there to stay.  I realized he had no ears. Oh no! And no neck. Hummm.  Ahh , a raise the scarf, and weirder hair.  We’ll you get my point.  Practice, practice , practice, learn, learn, learn.

That’s it. I quit. I’m over this.

The battle is over. St. Francis wins.  Nah, I just have to paint in the cross in his right hand.  We have worked together long enough.  This is weird. I have a tendency to save a little bit of everything in case I should ever run out. Like that last ounce of shampoo or hand cream and so on. It seems to me, I may have done the same thing with painting. Quitting just before it runs out so to speak.

“I’ve always thought of painting as some kind of gift. And as a gift, there is a duty that comes with it: to push painting as far as you can. Artists serve society simply by producing a good painting. And that’s the hardest thing in the world. People think it’s a lark. It’s not. “. (Sonia Getchoff)

Anyone studying portraiture knows getting a likeness has everything to do with the eyes.  Most tend to make the eyes too big.  Knowing this fact I seem to have made them just a bit too small.  To correct this, I closed in the sides of her face at the end with the hair to disguise a fatal mistake .
